While propane is a common source of fuel used in residential barbecues, it can be dangerous if you do not use it correctly or store it improperly.

Follow these do's and don'ts to stay safe while using your new propane-powered barbecue:

Do always install your propane tanks in a vertical position, with their valves located on the top of the tank. If you place the cylinder on its side, then the propane can leak out of the canister. This type of leak can cause a fire when you light your barbecue to use it.

Don't ever keep propane tanks in enclosed areas. You should always have an open area for your propane tank that is well vented to the outdoors. Propane gas is heavier than air, and containing it within an enclosed space is an explosion hazard.

Do locate the emergency shut off valve for the propane used in your barbecue before you light the appliance for the first time. If your barbecue malfunctions or you have an emergency, then it is likely that you will need to cut off the gas supply using this emergency valve.

Don't ever reach across an open flame to turn off the propane supply to your barbecue. If you reach across the flame, the flame could spike and cause you to become seriously burned. Instead, walk around your barbecue to turn off the propane supply at the emergency supply valve.

Do use copper supply lines with your propane cylinders. While some people choose to use flexible stainless steel lines, copper metal will not corrode with propane and is considered to be the metal of choice for a residential barbecue that runs on propane gas.

Don't neglect to check the propane supply lines each time before you lite your barbecue. Check the line for any signs of damage and do not use the barbecue if you find any issues with the supply line. Instead, close the emergency valve for your barbecue, close the valve on the cylinder, and then replace the supply line with a new one.
